For couples seeking a peaceful retreat in unspoilt rural surroundings without feeling too isolated, Casa Las Uvas offers the best of both worlds. This lovingly restored old house stands in a quiet street on the edge of the traditional inland village of Alajeró, approximately 500 metres from the centre, and boasts glorious views across a ravine to the main part of the village and down to the coast.
The village's setting could also be described as the best of both worlds, for it is just 9 km from the small south coast resort of Playa Santiago, one of the sunniest and warmest spots on the island, but at an altitude of over 700 metres, it is equally close to the renowned Garajonay National Park and some of the other spectacular mountain scenery that makes La Gomera such a mecca for walkers. With just 300 inhabitants, Alajeró is definitely on the sleepy side, but there is a local restaurant within walking distance, as well as a small shop for basic provisions.
Casa Las Uvas is divided into three self-contained dwellings. The house's German owners live on the upper floor, and whilst they do not speak much English, they offer a friendly but unobtrusive welcome. On the lower floor are the two guest apartments, each with its own independent access and a lovely terrace area. One of these has a living room and a separate bedroom, whilst the other is an open-plan studio. Although not luxurious, plenty of thought and attention to detail went into making the accommodation homely and comfortable. WiFi is provided free of charge.
With its wooden floors, partially exposed stone walls and carefully chosen ornaments, the apartment has a charmingly traditional feel. The living room has a sofa and armchair, satellite TV (limited English-language channels), CD player and a radiator for cooler evenings. The adjacent kitchen is fully equipped with a fridge, hob, oven, coffee maker and toaster. A bedroom with twin beds arranged side by side and a shower room complete the accommodation.
The open-plan studio offers similar facilities but is a little more compact. Although more modern in style, it still offers plenty of character, with its stone-flagged floors and some quirky decorative touches.
Alajeró's hillside setting means that there is some lovely walking terrain right on your doorstep, but with the hire car that is included in your holiday it is easy to explore the whole island. Alternatively, you may choose to just use your car to occasionally stock up on provisions, and spend your time relaxing on your terrace, enjoying a good book or taking in the view. Please note that guests are requested not to smoke in the property or its grounds.
