Aparthotel Playa Calera is conveniently situated in the heart of Valle Gran Rey's Playa district, barely 100 metres from the resort's main beach with its mixture of smooth rocks, pebbles and dark volcanic sand. A good selection of local restaurants and cafés, as well as a couple of atmospheric bars, are dotted along the pedestrian seafront promenade and scattered in the small grid of side streets, and the nearest small supermarket and other shops for your day-to-day needs can be found equally close by.
The L-shaped hotel building encloses two sides of a small public square and has been attractively designed using natural stone, wood and traditional roof tiles. It comprises 63 junior suites and suites arranged on three floors. Offering some of the most stylish accommodation available in Valle Gran Rey, each junior suite is approximately 36 square metres in size. A couple of steps lead down from the sleeping area, which has twin beds arranged side by side, to a sitting area with a sofa-bed for a third person. Each has a modern en-suite shower room, as well as a small kitchenette unit with a fridge and mini-hob, which whilst not intended for actual self-catering comes in handy for keeping drinks cool and preparing the odd simple snack. Other facilities include air-conditioning, satellite TV (limited English-language channels), safety-deposit-boxes (local charge applies) and free WiFi. Each junior suite also has a good-size covered balcony, with partial/lateral sea views available as an optional extra. There is also a small number of larger suites with a separate second bedroom and shower room.
The hotel's crowning glory is its large roof terrace which enjoys panoramic views of the ocean, the village, the valley and the mountains. The terrace incorporates an attractive, mosaic-tiled swimming pool, which is heated in winter to a temperature of around 20-22 degrees Celsius. The decked terrace that border the pool is stocked with loungers for those occasions when you simply wish to relax and enjoy the sunshine, although it is fair to say that most guests tend to spend much of their time exploring the island on foot or by bike; organised walking or cycling excursions can be booked in the village.
Days at the Playa Calera start with a buffet breakfast served in the ground-floor restaurant. The hotel offers a reasonably-priced half board option, with dinner also being served buffet style, but with a good choice of eating places in the immediate vicinity - and further options by the harbour in the district of Vueltas at the other end of the bay - we expect that many guests will prefer the flexibility of the bed-and-breakfast arrangement in order to try out all that the charming resort of Valle Gran Rey has to offer.
