Enjoying an excellent position right on the seafront roughly halfway between the fishing harbour of Vueltas and Valle Gran Rey's main beach area, which is simply known as Playa, the Gran Rey is a very well-run and justly popular hotel, attracting many repeat guests who appreciate its scenic and convenient location, its comfortable accommodation and its friendly service.
Only a small road separates the two-storey hotel from the rocky shore. Sandier stretches of beach (albeit naturally of dark, volcanic sand) can be found a short stroll in either direction. But for most guests, it is not the beach that is the main attraction, but the excellent walking opportunities offered in and around Valle Gran Rey. From the rooftop terrace, which incorporates a small swimming pool, guests can enjoy panoramic views in both directions - on one side the ocean, on the other the lush valley framed by majestic mountain slopes.
Up here, on the top floor, you will also find the hotel's sunny breakfast room - a very appealing place to start the day with an extensive buffet, and the daytime snack-bar. For those guests choosing the excellent-value half-board option, dinner is also served buffet-style in the ground-floor dining room, whilst those who prefer just bed & breakfast will find a decent selection of local restaurants within easy walking distance.
There are just under 100 guestrooms, each with a balcony facing either the sea or the valley (the views are lovely on both sides, so the choice really is a matter of personal taste). Inside, all are attractively furnished and equipped with telephones, satellite TV, safety deposit boxes and air-conditioning (centrally controlled). There are also hairdryers provided in the modern en suite-bathrooms.
For those who fancy a bit of exercise other than walking, the hotel has its own tennis court (payable locally, and separated from the hotel by a small banana plantation), whilst those simply seeking relaxation will find ample sun-loungers and umbrellas on the roof terrace.
Those wishing to explore further afield do not necessarily need to hire a car, for Valle Gran Rey is served by a fairly decent public bus service, and there are also boat trips from the small harbour at Vueltas to San Sebastián, and around the north coast to the unique, organ-pipe shaped sea cliff of Los Órganos. In addition, a selection of guided walks and coach excursions can also be arranged from here.
