La Gomera's island capital, San Sebastian, may be a sleepy provincial town rather than a bustling metropolis, but makes an excellent base for holidaymakers who do not wish to depend on a hire car in order to explore the island, and who would rather stay amongst the local population than be surrounded by other tourists. Buses depart from here to most other parts of the island, although you will wish to consult the timetable in advance as most routes only run a few times each day, and the town itself is very pleasant to potter around in, with its small port, its pretty square, its well-kept park and its volcanic beach.
The Hotel Torre del Conde stands in a side street just 150 metres from the town beach, and backs onto the park which surrounds the 15th-century "Count's Tower", after which it was named. Catering to local business travellers and independently-minded holidaymakers alike, it comprises 38 rooms on five floors (there is a lift). The rooms are pleasantly furnished and decorated, and are equipped with air-conditioning, telephones, mini-bars, TVs and safety deposit boxes (rental charge applies). Each also has a modern bathroom. Room with views of the park are available at a supplement, as are superior rooms which are slightly larger. Whilst the individual rooms do not have balconies, there is a communal roof terrace with sun-loungers, or you could join the locals by heading to the park or the beach to soak up the rays.
On the ground floor you will find the small reception area, where you can use the hotel's WiFi free of charge, and the hotel's bar and restaurant. A continental buffet breakfast is automatically included in your stay, and there is a half-board option with a daily set menu for dinner. Alternatively, you may prefer to try out some of the different local eateries in the narrow streets of San Sebastian's old town.
