As its name suggests, this fully renovated aparthotel is ideal for hikers, cyclists and others keen to engage in active pursuits whilst on holiday, but it also makes a peaceful and comfortable base in which to relax and from which to explore the island's attractions at leisure. Route Active Hotel stands in a quiet, predominantly residential area on the cliff-top approximately 5 km west from the centre of Puerto de la Cruz, on the outskirts of the local town of Los Realejos.
The hotel's 93 apartments and the bright and airy public areas are spread across four buildings with between two and four storeys, all set in well-kept gardens around a good-size swimming pool that is heated during the winter season (November to April). The apartments are spacious and comfortably furnished, each consisting of a bedroom with twin beds, a living room with a sofa-bed, satellite TV (limited English-language channels), telephone, dining area and an open-plan kitchenette with a fridge, microwave and two-ring hob, as well as a modern shower room with hairdryer and a furnished balcony or terrace with pool or garden views. the maximum occupancy is either three adults or two adults plus two children up to 12 years of age. Superior apartments have the same layout and furnishings but have direct access to the gardens from their terrace areas and offer some additional amenities, including bathrobes and slippers, a fruit basket on arrival and toasters and kettles/coffeemakers in the kitchenette areas.
Although the kitchenettes are equipped for basic self-catering, a wholesome buffet breakfast is automatically included in your stay and sets you up for the day's activities. Walkers will be in their element at Route Active, with some excellent walking trails right on their doorstep, such as the coastal Camino El Burgado through the nature reserve of Rambla del Castro to Las Aguas, passing the 18th century fortress of San Fernando, the picturesque ruins of the old water elevator at Gordejuela and the volcanic beach of Socorro along the way. A rather more challenging option is "Route 040", the most direct route from the coast to the peak of Mount Teide, but as this is still 28 km and ascends from sea level to an altitude of 3,718 metres, only the most seasoned of mountain walkers should attempt this in its entirety! For something more manageable, the hotel organises occasional guided walks in different parts of the island whilst for those who prefer to explore on two wheels, there is a bicycle hire shop on-site, as well as organised excursions by bike. Other activities that can be arranged through the hotel's helpful and friendly staff include scuba-diving and tandem paragliding, and there is also a well-equipped gym available for keeping in shape without leaving the hotel. Any activities offered are payable locally and are subject to availability, weather conditions and sufficient demand.
For those keen to explore the island independently, we offer reduced-rate car hire if collected on arrival at the airport. Although the hotel does not have its own car park, there is free parking in the surrounding streets. Those who prefer not to drive can still experience much of Tenerife from here; in additions to the outings organised by the hotel, you can catch local buses to Puerto de la Cruz and further afield (the nearest stop is just 200 metres away and just a little further a two other stops served by different routes). The nearest local restaurants, shops and bars are a 10-minute walk away in the neighbourhood of El Toscal, with a wider selection available in Puerto de la Cruz where you will also find the landscaped volcanic beach Playa Jardin and the César Manrique-designed seawater swimming pool complex, Lido Martianez. For those who prefer not to go out in the evenings, the hotel also offers a half-board option with buffet-style dinners during the winter season.
Whilst the contemporary styling of the Route Active's interiors reflect its sporty personality, the hotel's ambience is very relaxed, without any forced joviality or obtrusive entertainment programme. After sampling the local restaurants for dinner, guests at the Route Active Hotel tend to relax with a nightcap on their balcony before settling down for a good night's sleep, ready for whatever discoveries the following day may bring.
