If you would like to stay in a traditional village away from the tourist crowds, but also wish to have reasonably easy access to some of the south coast's beaches, as well as exploring the island's stunning mountain scenery, this immensely pretty little hotel may be in just the right spot. The village of Granadilla de Abona is situated approximately 600 metres above sea level in the south of the island and is therefore ideal for anyone wishing to enjoy both the mountains and the coast. The nearest beaches are approximately 15 km away in the small and laid back town of El Medano, whilst in the opposite direction the mountain roads climb through pine forests towards the spectacular volcanic landscapes of the Canadas del Teide National Park.
The Hotel Senderos de Abona was created from a lovingly restored 19th-century building that once served as the village post office, and stands on a picturesque square opposite the local church, whose bells chime on the hour (but not between midnight and 8 am). It comprises 15 prettily decorated guestrooms with double or twin beds, all individually furnished in a style that befits the building's historic fabric. All are equipped with telephones, satellite TV (limited English-language channels), safety-deposit boxes, central heating and en-suite bath or shower rooms. There is also a spacious Junior Suite furnished with carefully chosen antiques.
The rambling old building encloses a series of delightful garden terraces and courtyards, where you can sit and relax, read a book or take a dip in the small swimming pool. The public rooms are also full of old-world charm. There is a cosy bar/bodega that doubles up as a mini-museum with a display of ancient farming implements on the walls, and the hotel's restaurant serves a wholesome breakfast every morning. For dinner, there are a couple of simple local tascas in the village, or you could use your hire car to visit some of the atmospheric fish restaurants down on the coast in El Medano (please note that, from September 2017 onwards, the hotel's restaurant only serves breakfast).
Using the hire car, much of the island can easily be explored from here. The island capital Santa Cruz and the old university town of La Laguna are around 45 minutes away by car, or you could stop off on the way at Guimar to visit the remains of its pyramids. For those who prefer to explore on foot, there are some interesting walking trails right on your doorstep. Tenerife South airport is only 15 km away, so you can start enjoying your holiday in this charming village retreat almost as soon as you have landed.
