A veritable Tenerife institution, the Tigaiga is one of the island's most established and best-loved hotels. Opened in 1959 by Enrique Talg Schulz, one of the pioneers of Tenerife tourism, the hotel is still owned and run by the Talg family, and the current third generation take immense pride in continually improving their hotel, and in maintaining the highly personal level of service that has earned them such a loyal following over the decades. Their efforts to look not only after their guests, but also after the environment, have been recognised by the ISO 9001 quality management system, the ISO 14001-EMAS environmental management certificate and a whole host of travel industry awards, but what must be even more rewarding than any number of certificates is the fact that so many guests return year after year.
The Tigaiga stands in an elevated position next to the Taoro Park, with panoramic views across the Orotava Valley to the peak of Mount Teide, and across the town of Puerto de la Cruz to the Atlantic Ocean. The walk down to the town centre - through the park and down a number of stairs - takes around 20 minutes, but taxis are readily available should you not fancy the uphill walk back. This peaceful and scenic location is perfect for relaxation, enhanced further by the hotel's magnificent subtropical gardens - there are more palm trees in the garden than beds in the hotel, and those with an interest in botany can obtain more information about the many plant species found in the grounds from the hotel's online plant catalogue.
With just 76 rooms and 7 suites, the Tigaiga offers an intimate and personal ambience. The rooms themselves are comfortably furnished and well sound-proofed, and equipped with air-conditioning, flat-screen TV (limited English-language channels), mini-bars, free WiFi and safety deposit boxes (hire charge applies). Bathrobes, large mirrors, hairdryers and a range of toiletries are provided in the en-suite bathrooms, as are pool towels. Each room has a furnished balcony, facing either Mount Teide or the Taoro Park. There are a number of rooms on the raised ground floor with views slightly obscured by the mature vegetation of the gardens; these are offered at a preferential rate.
Within the grounds you will find a heated swimming pool with splendid ocean views, two ping-pong tables, a giant chess set, and a sauna with a panoramic window looking out over the town. Inside, there is a shop for holiday essentials, a hairdresser, a pilates room, and a massage studio for those who enjoy a little pampering. An extensive buffet breakfast is laid on every morning in the main restaurant Jardín, where those opting for the half-board arrangement also choose their dinner from the 4-course table d'hôte menu with waiter service, accompanied by salad, fruit and vegetable buffet. The à la carte restaurant Tinguaro is open throughout the day, serving delicious cakes and pastries in the afternoon, and lunches and dinners sourced from local produce wherever possible, according to the hotel's motto that its guests should travel, not their food!
Whether you plan to spend your time pottering around the charming town of Puerto de la Cruz, hiking in the nearby countryside, or just relaxing by the pool, the Tigaiga is a delightful base for anyone who appreciates traditional hospitality and personal service.
PLEASE NOTE: There is currently building work taking place approximately 150 metres from the Hotel Tigaiga due to the restoration of the old Grand Hotel Taoro, so some noise impact during the daytime can not be ruled out. The main construction work is scheduled to be completed by 31 October 2023; after that date internal works will continue until spring 2024 but these should not cause undue disruption to guests at the Tigaiga.
