The Elia Palazzo Hotel is situated at the bottom of one of the pedestrianised cobbled streets behind the much photographed old harbour. Although only 300 metres from the bustling harbour front with its enticing tavernas, cafés and bars, the hotel feels pleasantly removed from the main hubbub, offering a charming base from which to enjoy all that Chania has to ofer.
The Palazzo was carefully converted from a historic Venetian mansion a number of years ago and still oozes period charm, with its immaculately polished wooden floors and wide stone arches. However, following comprehensive refurbishment in the winter of 2016/17, it also offers comfortable accommodation with a fresh, contemporary style. It is part of Elia Hotels, a small locally-based chain' whose staff strive to uphold the Cretan tradition of generous hospitality.
The Elia Palazzo has just eleven rooms, lending it a very intimate and personal feel. Each room is named after a Cretan deity, and all have air-conditioning, televisions, fridges, telephones, safety deposit boxes and modern en-suite shower rooms. Some of the rooms have a convertible sofa-bed for a third person. Superior rooms have small, wrought-iron balconies looking out across the mainly pedestrianised street with sideward glimpses towards the sea, and there is also a room with a large Jacuzzi bathtub.
A tasty continental buffet is laid out in the cosy breakfast room on the ground floor each morning, whilst the large communal roof terrace has views of the sea, the coastline and the omnipresent White Mountains
For those using the Elia Palazzo as a base for exploring the island there is a car park at the end of the street and the bus station and taxi ranks and within easy walking distance, as are all the modern day facilities of the town. A short walk along the seafront will bring you to the sandy town beach fringed by bustling fish tavernas much favoured by the locals.
