Peacefully situated on the west coast of the Akrotiri Peninsula, this small and attractive cluster of apartments has established itself as a firm favourite amongst visitors to the area, thanks to its splendidly mature gardens, its thoroughly relaxing ambience and above all, its wonderfully scenic position. Perched on a low rocky headland just a short stroll from the sheltered sandy cove of Tersanas, Alianthos boasts glorious views along the coast towards the Gulf of Chania and the majestic White Mountains beyond.
Alianthos comprises a dozen apartments, spread over two double-storey buildings inspired by classic Clycadic style. The majority have a twin or double bedroom and a separate lounge with a sofa bed for up to two additional guest, as well as an open-plan kitchenette and a modern bath or shower room. Three apartments have an additional double bedroom and can thus accommodate families of up to six people, whilst for couples there are also a number of open-plan studios with either double or twin beds. Alianthos has been established for a number of years, but the suites were comprehensively renovated in 2020 in an attractive, contemporary style, creating a bright and airy feel. The open-plan kitchenettes are equipped with a fridge, two-ring hob and a kettle, and safety deposit boxes and air-conditioning are also provided (local charges apply). Each studio and apartment also has a balcony or terrace overlooking the gardens or the sea, although the views may be partially obscured by the lush foliage of the surrounding gardens.
As well as containing fragrant pines, shade-giving tamarisks and colourful hibiscus and bougainvillaea, the garden encloses a large polygonal swimming pool, amply stocked with sunloungers and umbrellas. A pool bar is on hand to supply drinks and light snacks throughout the day, whilst in the mornings a tasty breakfast is included in your stay here. There is also a paddling pool for children, as well as a play area. Those who prefer sea-swimming can bathe off the rocks below Alianthos, or walk down to the lovely sandy cove of Tersanas. Slightly further away (about five minutes' drive), the busier beach of Kalathas offers a selection of watersports during the season. Another way to stay active is by using Alianthos's tennis courts, although you may find yourself distracted by the splendid views!
The tavernas in the nearby village of Horafakia serve honest home cooking in unpretentious surroundings, and there are others dotted around the Akrotiri Peninsula that can be reached using your hire car in no more than 10 minutes. For more sophisticated nights out, the bustling town of Chania is just a 20-minute drive away. The port of Souda is a similar distance and whilst not as picturesque as Chania's Venetian harbour front, is a good venue for the freshest fish and seafood.
