Situated approximately 7 km south of Chios Town and just 4 km from the coast, this lovely property, set within a four-acre country estate, gives a glimpse into the lifestyle enjoyed by the Genoese nobility. Expertly restored, the main mansion at Perleas dates back to 1640 and together with two equally well renovated outbuildings, contains just seven charming guestrooms, as well as the estate manager's private accommodation. All the rooms are individually furnished and decorated, carefully chosen antiques, paintings and objets d'art lending each a very personal charm. Some of the most interesting pieces, such as a vintage jukebox, an early Singer sewing machine and a cinematographic camera from 1935, have been placed in the public areas, so that all guests can enjoy them. The guestrooms themselves are equipped with mini-bars, air-conditioning and telephones, and each has an en-suite bath or shower room. Although they do not have balconies, all enjoy lovely views across the gardens and orchards through large windows, and there are several communal terraces where you can relax, savour the views and allow yourself to be intoxicated by the sweet scents of orange blossom and jasmine.
Whilst the grandeur of the buildings conjures up the spirit of a more graceful, bygone age, there is nothing pretentious about the place, and part of the appeal of staying at Perleas is that this is still a working farm, which has been certified as organic since 1993. As is typical of this area, most of the land is taken up by citrus orchards, but the farm also produces potatoes, vegetables and small quantities of olive oil, and keeps chickens, turkeys, rabbits, pigs and goats - away from the accommodation buildings, we hasten to add! Naturally, the estate's home-made citrus preserves feature prominently at breakfast time, and the traditional Greek cuisine that is available on request for lunch and dinner utilises the farm's own fresh produce as much as possible. Specialities include cheese pies, tomato fritters, turkey with fried potatoes and aubergines, and pork with artichokes.
For those simply wishing to relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings, perhaps occasionally venturing into Chios Town or to one of the beaches to the south, a hire car is not strictly necessary, as your hosts will be happy to summon a taxi for you whenever required. Those keen to explore a little further afield will want to hire a car for at least part of their stay, and will find that this makes a very central and convenient base from which to discover the entire island.
