Offering high-quality accommodation in a peaceful yet convenient setting, coupled with the very best of traditional Greek hospitality, it is no wonder that the Emporios Bay has established itself as one of the most popular properties on Chios. Situated in the south of the island, the small seaside village of Emporios has a laid-back, end-of-the-road feel, with a small cluster of tavernas huddled around the small shingle beach-cum-fishing harbour. Just a 400-metre stroll across the headland, however, takes you to one of the island’s most famous beaches, Mavra Volia, with its distinctive jet-black pebbles, so the village attracts its share of visitors during the day, but that does not detract from the relaxed atmosphere, and in the evenings the few holidaymakers lucky enough to actually stay here have the place to themselves.
The Emporios Bay stands just 50 metres from the sea and consists of 40 spacious studios and apartments, combining the convenience of self-catering accommodation with the services, facilities and ambience of a small family-run hotel. Furnished and decorated with great care and attention to detail, they benefit from such extras as air-conditioning, satellite TV, safety-deposit boxes, hairdryers and free wi-fi internet access. Each studios and apartments also has a terrace or balcony, as well as a modern bath or shower room. There is a choice of double or twin beds, and the apartments boast a separate living room with an additional pull-out sofa that converts into two single beds, making them suitable for up to four people.
Although all the rooms have small open-plan kitchenettes suitable for preparing light meals and snacks, breakfast is included so you can start your day with treats such as homemade cakes and jams. For lazy days there is an enticing swimming pool surrounded by decent quality sunloungers, and the hotel's bar is on hand to keep you supplied with refreshing drinks. For dinner, it is just the shortest of strolls to the local tavernas.
Whilst those wishing to tour the island will need to hire a car for part of their stay, there is plenty to be enjoyed close to base. A short walk away, you can discover the ruins of the ancient settlement of Emporios, dating back to the 9th century B.C., and for a change from the local black beach, the sandy beach of Komi is just 2 km away. The famous mastic villages can also be explored from here, with the largest and liveliest of them, Pirgi, just 6 km away.
