The Marelina Apartments are something of a rarity as comfortable accommodation just a stone's throw from a sandy beach yet in a village still oozing Cretan character is not easily come by.
Although Panormos appears to be just a small fishing village with narrow cobbled streets, the remnants of some impressive architecture attest to its long history and former glory as an important trading port, dating as far back as Roman times. Today it welcomes its summer visitors with just enough local tavernas and shops to keep everyone happy without the over commercialised trappings that have ruined so many other villages.
Set close to the shoreline, the Marelina's two colourful buildings house twelve studios and apartments, and shelter a small pool in the central courtyard. The apartments are arranged on three floors and all have at least partial sea views from their balconies. They are all simply but colourfully furnished, in keeping with their setting, and naturally have the all-important air-conditioning unit. Other touches are satellite televisions in each room, although English-speaking channels are very limited, and direct dial telephones.
The twin-bedded studios incorporate a small kitchenette and have a tiled shower room and sleep just two whereas the apartments also have a separate bedroom with twin beds and a sofa bed in the living room.
In addition to the courtyard pool area there is a communal bar area and subject to demand, the friendly owners arrange occasional Cretan barbeque evenings. For those who do not wish to self-cater, they also provide a tasty breakfast in the mornings.
For those seeking a relaxed seaside holiday with a selection of tavernas, shops and beaches just as short stroll away the Marelina Apartments are in the ideal location. With its central location on the north coast between the towns of Rethymnon and Heraklion, Panormos is well placed to explore many of the most fascinating sites on the island and whilst a hire car is by no means a necessity those wishing to explore the area more fully may wish to consider having one for at least part of their stay.
