This charming boutique hotel has arguably the most impressive location of any hotel in Cappadocia, just below the ancient rock castle of Uchisar, the highest point in the region. As well as granting magnificent views across Cappadocia's unique landscapes (and across to the Argeus Mountains from the castle inself), this means that some of the area's key sights can be reached on foot from here, and keen walkers will certainly enjoy the hike from Uchisar to neighbouring Goreme through the famous Pigeon Valley. If you choose to hire a car or even just to make use of public transport and organised excursions, all the region's attractions can easily be reached from here, and the hotel's friendly owner, Abdullah, will be more than happy to assist with local advice.
Kale Konak was created from three adjacent traditional Turkish houses, expertly restored to preserve their unique architectural features whilst offering a contemporary level of comfort. As is customary in these parts, some of the accommodation is in cave-style rooms dug into the rock, whilst the remainder was built from local stone, with stunning vaulted ceilings and individual details such as original doors, quirky alcoves and open fireplaces lending each room its own distinctive character. There are nine standard rooms (six of these have queen-size double beds, the other three have twin beds), two deluxe rooms, and three suites. Inevitably, all vary in size, layout and outlook, but all are beautifully furnished with local antiques and tastefully decorated in a style respectful of the building's ancient fabric. Each room and suite has an en-suite bath or shower room with hairdryer, satellite TV and wired internet access (free WiFi is available in the reception area). Heating is provided for the cooler season, but air-conditioning is not required as the thick stone or rock walls tend to keep the interiors pleasant even in the height of summer.
In the mornings, a wholesome breakfast sets you up for the day - on the terrace overlooking the Pigeon Valley, weather permitting - and the hotel also has a small restaurant for dinner, as well as cosy lounges and terraces where you can linger over a drink while getting to know your fellow travellers. The Kale Konak also has its own Hamam (Turkish Bath), so to unwind and reinvigorate yourself after a day's exploring, why not treat yourself to a traditional soap massage?
